Local Area Network (LAN)
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that interconnects computers and devices within a limited geographic area — typically a home, office, or building. Devices on a LAN can communicate directly with each other at high speed without routing traffic through the internet. Most modern LANs use Ethernet for wired connections and Wi-Fi for wireless connections, both governed by IEEE standards.
A LAN is usually connected to the internet through a router or gateway, which handles traffic between the local network and the wider internet. Internally, the LAN may be further divided into segments using VLANs to separate different types of traffic.
