Internet of Things (IOT)
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software, and communication hardware that allows them to collect and exchange data over the internet. IoT devices range from simple sensors that report temperature or motion to complex appliances that can be monitored and controlled remotely. What distinguishes IoT from traditional computing is that these devices are purpose-built for a specific sensing or control function rather than general-purpose computing.
IoT devices typically communicate using standard internet protocols (Wi-Fi, Ethernet) or lower-power alternatives (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread). They often interact with cloud services or local hubs that aggregate their data and coordinate automation.
In This Home
The home has a dedicated IoT VLAN that isolates smart home devices from the main network. Devices on this segment include ESPHome-programmed sensor and control boards, the Enphase IQ Gateway, and various smart switches and plugs. Automations are managed through Home Assistant.
